In Loving Tribute to Robin Donald Smith

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED TENOR, FATHER, OPERATIC COACH, MENTOR & INSPIRATION

MMC wishes to pay homage to Jodie-Joy’s father, the esteemed international operatic tenor and former MMC teacher, Robin Donald Smith, who sadly passed in 2022. A man whose artistry, dedication, and generosity of spirit touched countless lives, Robin’s legacy—alongside that of Jodie-Joy’s grandfather, the legendary world-renowned tenor Donald Sydney Smith OBE—lives on forever. Long live Opera!

Robin’s career was nothing short of extraordinary. For over 30 years, he graced stages across the globe, performing alongside some of the greatest names in opera. His artistry was not only admired by audiences worldwide but cherished by every student fortunate enough to learn from him. Robin’s passion for teaching was matched only by his brilliance as a performer—a dream come true for aspiring singers.

For more than 25 years, Robin captivated audiences with leading tenor roles throughout Britain, Australia, and the European continent. As principal tenor with Sadler’s Wells Opera Company, The English National Opera, and the Welsh National Opera, he performed throughout England, Scotland, and Wales. His European engagements took him to Germany, Belgium, Holland, and Greece, leaving an indelible mark on the international operatic stage.

Robin’s repertoire was vast and demanding, encompassing the works of Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Massenet, Donizetti, and Mozart. His unforgettable portrayals included Rodolfo in La Bohème, Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly, The Duke in Rigoletto, Des Grieux in Manon, Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore, and the Steersman and Erik in The Flying Dutchman, among many others.

Beyond his remarkable performances, Robin’s greatest legacy is the inspiration he imparted. Every student, colleague, and audience member he encountered carries a piece of his wisdom, warmth, and unwavering dedication to the art of opera. His story, and the story of the Smith family’s monumental contribution to opera, will never be forgotten.

Robin Donald Smith’s life reminds us that while voices may one day fall silent, their echoes—the impact of their artistry, mentorship, and humanity—resonate forever.
